OUTDOOR EVENTS TAKE CENTRE STAGE IN SUMMER INSPECTION CAMPAIGN

Jun 2, 2026 | Nationwide News

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has launched a nationwide summer inspection campaign targeting major outdoor events, including concerts and festivals, as activity across the sector increases over the coming weeks.

The HSA is engaging with event organisers and contractors to assess safety standards and drive improvements in occupational safety and health compliance. HSA inspectors will assess key safety areas, including work at height, traffic management, electrical safety, contractor supervision and the safe use of work equipment.

Deirdre Sinnott, HSA Senior Inspector, said that this sector presents unique safety challenges due to the temporary nature of work and the high number of workers involved in setting up and taking down events.

“Our focus is to raise awareness of key hazards, help understand the required safety standards and ensure that appropriate controls are in place to prevent injury. Where unsafe work activities are identified, we will take action to ensure workers are protected,” she added.

The events industry employs large numbers of contractors and outdoor workers, particularly during the build-up and dismantling phases. These ‘load-in’ and ‘load-out’ activities can involve significant risks, carried out under time pressure in fast moving working environments and often in poor weather conditions.

A further complicating factor is that much of the work can take place adjacent to event attendees and members of the public, increasing the need for robust planning, supervision and risk management.

Sinnott added, “While event goers enjoy a wide range of performances, displays and exhibits, a significant volume of high-risk work is taking place behind the scenes. This campaign is focused on ensuring that work activities are properly planned and managed so that events can be delivered safely for everyone involved.”
