The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is calling on the UK Government to implement a comprehensive, cross-departmental National Accident Prevention Strategy to reduce the rising number of accidental deaths.
RoSPA’s ‘Safer Lives, Stronger Nation’ report has highlighted an escalating crisis of preventable deaths and injuries across the UK. According to Becky Hickman, RoSPA’s CEO, accidents claim over 20,000 lives annually, making them the leading cause of preventable deaths in young adults.
“This crisis costs billions in lost output and strains the NHS. For years, successive governments have overlooked this problem, meaning it is getting worse. Now, we urgently need the government to recognise the issue and adopt a strategy to deal with it. We will not stop until this happens,” she noted.
Key Details of the Campaign
- Currently, accident prevention responsibilities are highly fragmented across various government departments and healthcare sectors, leading to overlapping efforts and missed opportunities to save lives.
- The strategy calls for coordinated national leadership to streamline data collection, educate the public, target those most at risk (such as the elderly), and reduce the massive human and economic costs of preventable accidents.
- In addition to public health, this push directly affects businesses – such as construction and logistics firms – making it increasingly vital for companies to adopt robust safety, training, and emergency response frameworks.
RoSPA’s report draws on research conducted by Dr James Broun, Research Manager at RoSPA. Dr Broun has built up a unique dataset, bringing together 20 years of accident data from all four nations for the first time.
The report outlines the scale of the problem and the solutions we need to reverse rising accident figures. RoSPA wants accidents to be treated as a national crisis and claims that the government needs to understand the issue and adopt a strategy to deal with it.
